What is ad creative fatigue?

Creative fatigue is the drop in performance that happens when the same people see the same ad too many times. CTR falls, CPM rises, and CPA climbs, even though nothing about your offer changed. The ad did not get worse; your audience got bored of it.

On Meta and TikTok, fatigue usually shows up as rising frequency next to a falling click-through rate. Most accounts start to see it somewhere between 3 and 5 views per person, earlier for cold prospecting audiences and later for warm retargeting.

How this calculator works

Monthly impressions are your budget divided by CPM, times 1,000. Reach is estimated with a Poisson curve, the standard approximation for ads served at random into an audience: reach = audience x (1 - e^(-impressions / audience)). Frequency is impressions divided by reach.

Each creative can absorb roughly audience x fatigue frequency impressions before it wears out. Divide your monthly impressions by that number and you get how many fresh creatives the month needs. The calculator never recommends fewer than the number of ads you keep live, because every live slot needs at least one new challenger a month to keep testing.

Days to fatigue spreads your daily impressions across your live creatives and counts how long one of them takes to hit the fatigue frequency.

How to read the result

Under 7 days to fatigue is high risk: you need new ads weekly, and anything slower will show up as rising CPA. Between 7 and 21 days is moderate: plan a fresh batch every two to three weeks. Over 21 days is low risk, which usually means a broad audience or a modest budget.

The fastest way to slow fatigue is not fewer ads, it is more distinct ads. New angles, hooks, and formats reset the clock because the audience treats them as new messages, not reruns.

Frequently asked questions

How many ad creatives should I test per month?

It depends on spend and audience size. A brand spending $10,000 a month at a $10 CPM into a 200,000-person audience needs around 5 fresh creatives a month. Shrink that audience to 20,000 and the same budget needs about 17. Use the calculator with your own numbers.

What frequency causes ad fatigue?

Most performance marketers see fatigue start between 3 and 5 average views per person for prospecting, and closer to 6 to 8 for retargeting. Watch for frequency rising while CTR falls over the same window.

How do I know if my Facebook ads have creative fatigue?

Look at frequency, CTR, and CPM together over 7 to 14 days. If frequency is climbing above 3 while CTR drops and CPM rises, the creative is fatiguing. Pausing it and launching a new angle usually recovers performance faster than changing the audience.

How often should I refresh my ad creatives?

Refresh before a creative hits fatigue frequency, not after. The days-to-fatigue result tells you the window. High-spend accounts with small audiences often refresh weekly; smaller budgets into broad audiences can go three to four weeks.

Where do I find my audience size?

Meta Ads Manager shows an estimated audience size when you build an ad set, and TikTok shows one in the targeting panel. For broad targeting, use the potential reach for your country and age range. If you are unsure, start with a preset and adjust.

Does this work for TikTok and Instagram ads?

Yes. The model only needs budget, CPM, audience size, and the frequency at which your ads start to wear out. TikTok audiences tend to fatigue faster, so many advertisers use a lower fatigue frequency there, around 2 to 3.
